Actually this comes from my local newspaper, but I didn't want to start an entire thread on the Oregon Caves. Although they are truly awesome IMO.

The description Emory Nelkie offers for the creature he seeks in the dark recesses of the Oregon Caves would give Superman the willies.

"Do you know what a hagfish looks like?" Nelkie asked, then added, "Think of a leech with teeth."

Never fear. The ghoulish creature he describes is a tiny conodont, which has been dead for millions of years. It can only be found in fossil form in rock like the marble that frames the caves in Oregon Caves National Monument. Often only the teeth can be found.
It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Why are prehistoric jaguars or other big cats always depicted as more disheveled and grizzled than their modern counterparts? Did grooming supposedly evolve in recent times?
